Lain Mandragoran was a Malkieri nobleman, al'Akir's brother and Lan's uncle. Together with his wife Breyan he had a son, Isam.

He and his brother were almost as close as twins and this did not change after Akir was raised to the throne. They had often rallied the land together.

He was celebrated for his deeds and the people loved him as much as they did al'Akir.

On a dare from his wife, he led his lances through the Blight into the Blasted Lands, perhaps even to Shayol Ghul, but was killed. This shook the Malkieri and broke their spirits to resist the Trolloc invasions.

Breyan blamed the King for Lain's death.

This series of events was part of a Darkfriend plot to destroy Malkier. It succeeded, and Malkier was lost to the Blight, leaving only a few scattered remnants of its people.
