Despite her placid appearance, she keeps a cudgel under her skirts and uses it on men that she thinks are behaving improperly.
Mat and some of the lords and officers of the Band of the Red Hand stay at her inn. When Mat begins flirting with Betse, the serving maid is afraid that Mistress Daelvin might disapprove if she sat there drinking wine with Mat. But when Mistress Daelvin sees Betse, she waves them on.

"Maybe Mistress Daelvin had worked out some sort of schedule. If she had, Betse was an exception. That slender young woman fetched wine for no one but Mat, danced with no one but Mat, and the innkeeper beamed at them so much like a mother at her daughter's wedding that it made Mat uncomfortable."
